Alternative University Project Redefines the Way We Learn.

From The Link: “Still in its infancy, the idea for the Alternative University Project first arose at McGill University, conceived by students in the midst of tuition protests and the looming possibility of student strikes. It has since grown to include over 50 members and many others who support the idea of stepping outside of the conventional university to learn. […] Redefining the idea of what a student is and the way in which the student learns is at the forefront of the AUP’s mission.”

Documentary Privatization and Working conditions at the University of Utrecht

Privatization & Working conditions at the University of Utrecht

The documentary Privatization & Working conditions at the University of Utrecht has just been released.

This fifteen minute film produced by Karlina Derks Bustamante for the “How Does The University Work?” course (self organised by – amongst others-  the Kritische Studenten Utrecht) describes the ongoing process of privatization at the margins of the university.

Teaser van de documentaire “How does the university work?” die in september 2011 zal uitkomen.

>Update: Now also on Youtube with English subtitles<

As KSU thinks about and realises new ways of education, it’s wise to consider that we are of course not the first ones to think about new forms of education (and we are not the only ones doing this now – open links below). Some words from the “anarchist prince” Peter Kropotkin, in The Conquest of Bread (pp.85):

This is why a free society, if it saw the number of idlers increasing in its midst, would no doubt think of looking first for the cause of laziness, in order to suppress it, before having recourse to punishment […] Do not you see that by your methods of teaching, framed by a Ministry for eight million scholars, who represent eight million different capacities, you only impose a system good for mediocrities, conceived by an average of mediocrities? Your school becomes a University of laziness, as your prison is a University of crime. Make the school free, abolish your University grades, appeal to the volunteers of teaching; begin that way, instead of making laws against laziness which only serve to increase it.
